Elizabeth Keckley, born in 1818 in Hillsborough, North Carolina, was an author, seamstress, and best friend to Mary Todd Lincoln. She was born a slave, and after she reached freedom, she started a school for young African American girls to teach them sewing and etiquette. Elizabeth presided as president and founder of the first Black Contraband Relief Association and wrote a tell-all book about the happenings in the White House during Lincoln’s tenure.
On February 29, an actress associated with Women in History will perform a monologue on Elizabeth Keckley, featuring an authentic time period costume. Following the monologue will be a question and answer session with the audience. Women in History is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education of all people through the dramatic recreation of lives of notable women in U.S. history.
