 October 6th

The Water and the Blood  by Nancy Turner

Frosty's eyes survey the landscape around her - white rural America - with the awestruck clarity of an innocent burned by sin. In her mother and sisters she sees fear and small-mindedness; in the eyes of local boys she sees racial hatred and hunger for war. When that war finally comes, it offers her a chance for escape - to California, and the caring arms of Gordon Benally, a Native American soldier. But when she returns to Texas she must face the rejection of a town still gripped by suspicion - and confront the memory of the crime that has marked her soul since adolescence.

Hearts of Horses   by Molly Gloss

In the winter of 1917, nineteen year-old-Martha Lessen saddles her horses and heads for a remote county in eastern Oregon looking for work 'gentling' wild horses.  Many of the regular hands are off fighting the war, and though the ranchers are skeptical of Martha's quiet, unconventional methods, it is clear that she has serious knowledege of horses.  Over the long, hard winter, the townsfolk witness Martha talking in low, sweet tones to horses believed beyond repair- and getting miraculous, almost immediate results. Ultimately, her gifts will earn her the respect of the men, the friendship of the women, and an indispensable place in the community.

Come celebrate the end of the year with us by reading this fascinating book!
