January is Thyroid Awareness Month. The thyroid gland is located in the base of the neck. Although it is a small gland, the thyroid influences many of the body's organs and is important to the body's overall well-being.

The following are some of the conditions that can occur when the thyroid is not functioning properly:

  • Hyperthyroidism: The thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone.
  • Hypothyroidism: The thyroid gland produces less than normal amounts of the thyroid hormone.
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: The body produces immune cells and autoantibodies which can damage thyroid cells and compromise their ability to make thyroid hormone.
  • Thyroid Nodules: A lump develops in or on the thyroid gland.
