General Health Information:

AskMe3 - Learn how to better understand your health by asking your healthcare provider 3 important questions. Includes a checklist to ensure clear health communication.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - This U.S. Government-run website has easy-to-use, unique features.  Planning a vacation?  The "Traveler's Health" section provides information on vaccinations, outbreaks, and finding a clinic in your destination state or country.  You can also look up health statistics and learn how to prepare for emergencies.

ClinicalTrials.gov - Search for research studies being done on various health topics. Search by medical condition, intervention, location, and type of participant being recruited.

Dirline - Looking for a support group or research organization? DIRLINE (Directory of Information Resources Online) is an online directory of over 8,400 health-related organizations and other resrouces that covers it all: educational institutions, government agencies, and advocacy groups.

Drug Digest - This is one of the best internet sites for information on pharmaceuticals, interactions, and herbals. It includes photographs of drugs and information for the physician and patient.

Family Doctor - From the American Academy of Family Physicians, a national medical organization representing more than 93,000 physicians, family practice residents, and medical students, this site provides information written and reviewed by physicians and patient education professionals.

Healthfinder.gov - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides this trusted health information website.  Take Personal Health Tools quizzes to determine your body mass index, target heart rate, or level of health.  Browse through a medical encyclopedia, subscribe to newsletters, and find health advice.  Information is also available in Spanish.

Healthy Roads Media - Literacy, health literacy, illness, aging, disability and language are all issues that can pose barriers to obtaining basic health information. This site contains free health education materials in a number of languages and a variety of formats.

Household Products Database - What's under your kitchen sink, in your garage, in your bathroom, and on the shelves in your laundry room? Learn more about what's in these products, about potential health effects, and about safety and handling. Includes Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Mayo Clinic - Visit this site from the Mayo Clinic, one of the most trusted names in medicine.  Look up a disease or condition, sign up for an e-newsletter, or get tips on healthy living.  This information is written in an easy-to-understand way.

MedlinePlus - This website is run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.  It includes timely information on a variety of topics, geared toward laypeople.  Take an interactive tutorial, search the Medical Encyclopedia, or find more information at the Featured Site. 
 
National Institutes of Health - This research-based site has health information aimed at different demographics.  There are quick links for Child & Teen Health, Men's Health, Minority Health, Seniors' Health, and Women's Health.  Check out NIH Radio to listen to their Podcast on your computer or MP3 player.

NCCAM - The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is one of the twenty-seven institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health. This site includes information about treatments and therapies for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Learn about how to be an informed consumer of CAM and stay informed on the latest new alerts.

NetWellness - This website is provided by the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University.  Look up various conditions in "Health Topics" or "Health Centers."  The most unique benefit to using NetWellness is the ability to Ask an Expert.  Click on a Health Topic or Health Center, then click on "Ask a Question" in the "Ask an Expert" section.  Each area has a medical expert who posts answers to these questions.

Ohio eLicense Center - Search for a doctor, chiropractor, dentist, or other Ohio licensed professional. Find contact information, original issue date of license, expiration date, and status.

Patient Inform - This site offers up-to-date research about the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, which is provided by the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association. This site also offers free access to selected medical journal articles and provides plain-language explanations of what the studies mean, how they compare with what is already known, and how patients should weigh them in making treatment decisions.

PubMed - Like MedLinePlus, this website is run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Insitutes of Health.  PubMed, however, is geared toward professionals and scholarly researchers.  Use this site to find more technical health and medical information.

WellZone - Here you will find easy-to-understand healthcare information from the Humana Foundation. You can read about diseases, diet, how to find doctors, and other health information. Just click on the pictures to find health information in everyday language.

Summa Barberton Hospital - Find information on Barberton's hospital, including news, maps, and career opportunities.

Summit County Health District - The mission of BHD is to prevent disease and promote, maintain and improve the good health of the people living and working within the Barberton Health District; to educate the community about public health matters and to enforce/implement State of Ohio and local public health programs.

Barberton Hospice and Palliative Care - Learn about the services provided, sign up for the newsletter, or learn how to volunteer.

Akron General - Explore the different departments, schedule an appointment, and search job openings at this hospital.

Akron Children's Hospital - The site includes information about the area's children's hospital, including a calendar of events, a New Parent eNewsletter, and contact information.

American Cancer Society - Use this site to learn about cancer, stay healthy, find support and treatment, explore research, and get involved.

Cancer.gov
- The National Cancer Institute is the Federal Government's principal agency for cancer research and training and is a component of the National Institutes of Health. The site provides quality cancer information on cancer topics including news, clinical trials, statistics, and research and funding.

Heart Health Information:

American Heart Association - Visit this site to search for heart-health events in your community, learn to identify the warning signs of heart attack and stroke, and find CPR classes near you.  Click on "For Patients" to visit the AHA's HeartHub for Patients, which provides various tools to help you manage your health.

Quit Smoking Information:

About.com Smoking Cessation - This site includes free email courses and support to help you quit, as well as a section on "After Quitting" to prevent relapse.  Subscribe to the frequently updated blog for new information.

Become an Ex - Check out this free online smoking cessation program.  It includes online tools such as a cigarette tracker, a Quit Date calendar, and a discussion board where you can interact with others who are also trying to quit.

Freedom From Smoking - The American Lung Association runs this site, which includes an online program with support to quit. 

QuitNet - Get online support, including chat and a personal quit page, by signing up for this free service.  Click on the "QuitNet" link at the left, then enter the number of cigarettes you smoke per day, how soon you smoke after waking up, and your postal code, and click on "Get Started Now!"

Smokefree.gov - This popular website is run by a variety of organizations, including the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control.  Its features include an online Quit Smoking guide and live instant message help.

Summit County Tobacco Prevention Coalition - Get information on free and local quit smoking classes.

AARP - Visit the health section of the AARP's website. The AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that aims to helps people 50 and over improve the quality of their lives.

Aging in the Know - Created by the American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging, this site offers up-to-date information for consumers on health and aging.

Alzheimer's Assocation - The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care and support and largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer research.

ADEAR - The Alzheimer's Disease Education & Referral Center website will help you find current, comprehensive Alzheimer's disease information and resources from the National Institute on Aging.

CDC - Visit the Centers for Disease Control's Healthy Aging for Older Adults page to read about healthy aging topics or use the interactive data tools.

InfoAging - This site from the American Federation for Aging Research includes information on biology, diseases, and healthy aging, as well as an Ask the Expert feature.

National Council on Aging - The goal of the NCOA is to improve the lives of older Americans. Visit this site for information on improving health, enhancing economic security, promoting independence and dignity, and strengthening community organizations.

NIH SeniorHealth
- This is the National Institutes of Health site for health information for senior citizens. The site includes special capabilities such as changing the text size and contrast and turning on speech. The site also includes a comprehensive list of videos in the site index. 

Positive Aging Resource Center - The mission of the PARC is to promote positive aging by providing information and resources to older adults and caregivers, health and social service professionals, and policy makers.
